Steering Committee, February 13, 2003
Additions and/or adjustments to the agenda: A motion to delete agenda item, “Proposed eastward extension of SW 24th Avenue” was made, seconded and approved.

Steering Committee, February 27, 2003
Administrator’s report: Ed Poppell gave an update on the proposed SW 24th Street extension. He provided drawings and photographs that helped clarify the route and the affected property. A motion was made that Mr. Poppell’s office and the Senate co-sponsor a forum on this matter. The motion was approved.

[Yet no forum was held. Why not?]

Faculty Senate, March 20, 2003
Transportation and Parking Advisory Committee: Gail Sasnett, chair, delivered a report from the Transportation and Parking Advisory Committee (TPAC). The committee meets to discuss transportation and parking needs and issues. The committee serves as an advisory board to Vice President Ed Poppell. She opened the floor for questions and discussion. Topics included the SW 24th Avenue extension, the procedure for placing items on the TPAC agenda, taking a proactive rather than reactive position on transportation and parking issues, funding parking in conjunction with new construction, gated parking, parking for student housing, rainwater collecting in parking garage stairwells, parking restrictions when special events (ex., Career Day at the O’Connell Center) are held on campus and illegal parking after hours. A motion to have TPAC and the Lakes, Vegetation and Landscape Committee place the proposed SW 24th Avenue extension on their agendas for April was approved.

[The SW 24th Avenue extension was put on the agendas of the two committees as an information item. Lakes, Vegetation and Landscaping took action anyway.]

Faculty Senate, April 17, 2003
Proposed SW 24 th Avenue extension: Ed Poppell, began a discussion about the proposed SW 24 th Avenue extension. This extension would be another part in the creation of a student village. It could also become an east-west connector for Gainesville. Improved mass transit along SW 20 th Avenue was the first success story in establishing this student village.

Tina Gurucharri, chair of the Lakes, Vegetation and Landscaping Committee, read a motion from her committee that asked for further study and public input. The committee was also asked to approve a motion that read, “The UF administration should clarify its position on the SW 24th Avenue extension in order to address procedural concerns and ensure that a process will be implemented that allows for input from the entire university community before any final decisions are made.

Gail Sasnett, chair of the Transportation and Parking Advisory Committee, stated that her committee received a report on this matter from Linda Dixon. There was minimal discussion and no action taken by the committee. A motion was made and approved to move the above motion from an information item to an action item (Part 2). The motion as stated in paragraph two of this section passed with opposition.

[The SW 24th Avenue extension next appeared on the Faculty Senate agenda for the meeting of October 16, 2003, where it was listed both under the Chair's Remarks and New Business.]
