During its efforts to have the Faculty Senate request that President Young withdraw his commitment to recommend an amendment to the Master Plan in regards to SW 24th Avenue, the Natural Area Advisory Committee considered several drafts. The draft of 1 Oct 2003 was approved by NAAC and posted at http://natl.ifas.ufl.edu/SenAct3.htm. It reads

"Because no traffic study supports a four-lane SW 24th Avenue, it was premature for President Young to propose to donate right-of-way for a four-lane extension of that road through the Natural Area Teaching Laboratory and Preservation Area 1. The Faculty Senate therefore urges President Young to withdraw his commitment of 25 Mar 2003 that the University "will recommend through its Master Plan amendment process that sufficient right-of-way be given to … connect SW 24th Avenue to Archer Road." Withdrawal of the commitment will allow President Young's successor to re-evaluate the wisdom of the donation aided by the results of a traffic study (yet to be made) and input from the appropriate faculty committees."

However, during the final phases of lobbying the Senate Steering Committee to put SW 24th Avenue on the 16 Oct agenda as an action item, I wrote P. J. VanBlokland, Chair of the Lakes, Vegetation and Landscaping Committee, and suggested that as Chair of the Lakes, Vegetation and Landscaping Committee he request that SW 24th Avenue be made an action item on the agenda of the 16 Oct. Senate meeting and that the action he requested be to the effect that

"The Faculty Senate requests that President Young withdraw his 25 March 2003 commitment to recommend through the Master Plan amendment process the donation of right-of-way for a four-lane extension of SW 24th Avenue through the Natural Area Teaching Laboratory. Otherwise the donation will become a fait accompli and the intent of the Master Plan amendment process will have been thwarted."

At 3:46 pm, 8 Oct 2003, he sent my message to Tony Brennan with his endorsement.

Because this second phrasing is shorter, less confrontational, and has been formally submitted to the Chair of the Faculty Senate, perhaps it is the one to use.
