OLD-FIELD SUCCESSION : Looking east from grid stake G4.

January 1997

The tree in the foreground is a longleaf pine. Young oaks growing at the base of the pine completely obscure the view of Plot B to the left and partially obscure the view of Old Field Plot D to the right.

1 April 2004

The view of Old-Field Plots B and D is obscured by oak sprouts at the base of the longleaf pine. (The pine was left to increase the genetic diversity of the pollen that will participate in longleaf pine reproduction in the nearby upland pine.)

February 2007

Oak sprouts cleared from base of longleaf pine.

On left is Old-field Plot B: the portion visible was last re-started in 2005.

On right is Old-field Plot D, a 10-year plot last re-started in 1997. Trees have been cleared from the plot for a re-start in 2007. The log that is visible is from a longleaf pine that died and was felled into the plot.
