OLD-FIELD SUCCESSION : Looking north from grid stake I5.
January 1997

NATL's storm-water retention basin prior to its re-contouring for SEEP. This flat-bottom pond of uniform depth is dominated by a monoculture of cattails except for the recently added portion near the camera. The water is open here because the cattails have not yet had time to invade.

Because gridpoint I5 could not be exactly located, this picture was taken from its estimated location, later measured as at 82deg 22.0813'W and 38deg 38.0153'N with a sub-meter GPS device.

View toward SEEP through young loblolly pines; the deepest part of SEEP is beneath the open water in the foreground.
