Old-Field Photo Notes: 19 Jan & 4 Feb 2009

On 19 January 2009, Graduate TA Bret Pasch took a set of photographs with a Nikon D70 camera and a 18-70mm AF-S Nikkor DX lens at its shortest focal length setting. The resulting photos had a field of view about 80% wider than that with the 35mm lens used previously. Although the wider field of view at first seemed desirable, comparison of the photos with those taken with the 35mm lens revealed that the wider foreground was accompanied by objects on the far sides of the plots appearing unrealistically distant. It was decided to continue using the 35mm lens.

On 4 February 2009, pictures were again taken, this time with the same lens and camera as used for the previous three sets.

The foreground of Plot C is mostly occupied by a dense stand of dead goldenrod.

By late fall, Plot D was almost a pure stand of 6 to 7-foor tall ragweed. The dead stalks of these plants now dominate the plot.
