The species in the master list of NATL vascular plants are the 371 species in Dan Ward’s 1 May 2003 report, 21 additional species found by Cliff Martin (noted as “[CM]”), 22 additional species reported in NATL-east in the 12 September 2005 Floristic Inventory by Gretchen Ionta, assisted by Walter S. Judd, 3 additions verified by Walter Judd, 1 by Erick Smith, 12 by Weaver and Garland (2007), 2 by Richard Weaver, and 1 by T. J. Walker.

Ward annotated the species in his list in terms of these five “Associations”: Hammock, Upland Pine Unburned, Upland Pine Burned, Old-field Succession, and Wetland. To specify locations, he used the NATL grid system, which consists of 50 × 50 m squares, with each square identified by a coded stake at its northwest corner. He indicated the relative frequency of each plant species within each Association by the terms Common, Frequent, Infrequent, and Rare. In the case of species that were Infrequent or Rare, whenever possible, the location was further indicated by reference to its position within a grid square. He provided common names for those species whose vernacular names “are familiar and in general use.”

Ward preceded his list with these notes:
Note #1: For management purposes the Natural Area has been mapped in six contiguous blocks, each representing a single Association. (Upland Pine Unburned is in two discontinuous blocks.) However, for purposes of assigning species to appropriate Associations, the immediate environs of the individual plant is considered definitive. (Examples: A small cleared area or a plowed firebreak within a hammock or pineland is treated as Old-field Succession; plants of a sinkhole depression within a hammock are assigned to Wetland.)

Note #2: A large Longleaf Pine (Pinus palustris) in grid square B8 (just s. of Fla. Dept. of Agric. area) has been determined to be the sixth largest representative of its species in the state (Florida Champion Tree Program).

Martin modified Ward’s system of annotations as follows:
I5/J5 means near the boundary between grid squares I5 and J5, or in I5 and/or J5. Because Martin was uncertain how to distinguish between Ward’s common (C), frequent (F), infrequent (I), and rare (R) categories of plant frequency within an Association, he often applied multiple occurrence codes. For example, species that seemed widespread might be coded “I, F, or C,” whereas plants of a more isolated occurrence were usually coded “R or I.” For the Associations recognized by Ward, Martin used these abbreviations: HAMmock; upland pine unburned (UPU); upland pine burned (UPB); old field succession (OFS); and WETlands.

From 2005 to 2007, Walter Judd of the Botany Department helped resolve identification and nomenclatural questions that arose in updating this list and making it useful. His aid is gratefully acknowledged.

In June 2007, Dan Ward resumed his Plant Inventory of NATL and added three new species to the list. In 2007, because of his interest and knowledge, Richard Weaver, the botanist at the Division of Plant Industry, became the go-to person for help and advice for updates of this list.
