Plant Communities

The Natural Area Teaching Laboratory is divided by Surge Area Drive into two sections. The larger, westernmost section is known as NATL-West and the smaller eastern section is known as NATL-East.

NATL-West has one engineered and multiple natural plant communities. An ecologically-engineered wetland (SEEP) can be found along Surge Area Drive. The rest of the area is composed of three upland plant communities: upland hardwood forest, upland pine, and an old field. NATL-east has only upland hardwood forest and a large central marsh.
