Vascular Plants

Below, the more than 500 species of vascular plants known from NATL are listed alphabetically by scientific name.  To look for a plant by its common name, click on one of the growth-form buttons above.   At the bottom of this page you will find summarizing statistics, a history of this list, and links to relevant spreadsheets and documents.  A master spreadsheet that organizes relevant information on each species under 22 headings can be downloaded here.

The master list of NATL's vascular plants starts immediately below. For each entry, the scientific name is linked to the corresponding record in the ISB Atlas of Florida Vascular Plants, produced and maintained by Richard P. Wunderlin and Bruce F. Hansen. These links provide taxonomic and distribution information as well as images, where available.

Links to Aquatic and Wetland Plants and Invasive Plant Particulars and Photographs [AWIPPP] pages of the Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants give additional information and images for many species.

Links are also provided to the "NTphotosigns," which help users of NATL's self-guided nature trails learn to identify nearly 20% of its species of vascular plants.

* = not native to Florida (according to Atlas of Florida Vascular Plants, unless otherwise noted)

Picture icons next to the names designate growth form. In the key to icons below, each growth form is linked to a page that lists common names for all NATL species of that growth form:

History
In 1995, Jack Putz organized a "Cooperative Florula Project" to learn as much as possible about NATL's plant diversity in a brief period. With this goal, he assembled at NATL, on two dates in May 1995, groups of professors and students knowledgeable in plant identification to create lists of the vascular plants they could find and identify. These lists (still online) were posted on NATL's web site and were the only easily accessible information about NATL's floral diversity for 10 years.

Starting in 1999, Dan Ward spent five years developing an inventory of NATL's vascular plants. He annotated his list in terms of these five “Associations”: Hammock, Upland Pine Unburned, Upland Pine Burned, Old-field Succession, and Wetland. To specify locations, he used the NATL grid system, which consists of 50 × 50 m squares, with each square identified by a coded stake at its northwest corner. He indicated the relative frequency of each plant species within each Association by the terms Common, Frequent, Infrequent, and Rare. In the case of species that were Infrequent or Rare, whenever possible, the location was further indicated by reference to its position within a grid square. He provided common names for those species whose vernacular names “are familiar and in general use.”

Ward preceded his list with these notes:
Note #1: For management purposes the Natural Area has been mapped in six contiguous blocks, each representing a single Association. (Upland Pine Unburned is in two discontinuous blocks.) However, for purposes of assigning species to appropriate Associations, the immediate environs of the individual plant is considered definitive. (Examples: A small cleared area or a plowed firebreak within a hammock or pineland is treated as Old-field Succession; plants of a sinkhole depression within a hammock are assigned to Wetland.)

Note #2: A large Longleaf Pine (Pinus palustris) in grid square B8 (just s. of Fla. Dept. of Agric. area) has been determined to be the sixth largest representative of its species in the state (Florida Champion Tree Program).

In 2002, Cliff Martin reported 19 species of vascular plants in NATL that were not on Ward's list. In Martin's report he modified Ward’s system of annotations as follows:   I5/J5 means near the boundary between grid squares I5 and J5, or in I5 and/or J5. Because Martin was uncertain how to distinguish between Ward’s common (C), frequent (F), infrequent (I), and rare (R) categories of plant frequency within an Association, he often applied multiple occurrence codes. For example, species that seemed widespread might be coded “I, F, or C,” whereas plants of a more isolated occurrence were usually coded “R or I.” For the Associations recognized by Ward, Martin used these abbreviations: HAMmock; upland pine unburned (UPU); upland pine burned (UPB); old field succession (OFS); and WETlands.

In 2005, T. J. Walker, aided by Lucinda Treadwell, developed a new web site for NATL's vascular plants based on Ward's and Martin's work. This site featured a master list of the species Ward or Martin had found in NATL with an indication of abundance, habitat, and where it occurred in NATL. The list was arranaged alphabetically by scientific name, with each name linked to its page in the ISB Atlas of Florida Vascular Plants. Each species entry included a common name and a growth-form icon. Searching by common name was implemented by a list of common names for each growth form, with each common name linked to the appropriate entry in the master list. Ward and Martin had found most, but not all, of the species in Putz's 1995 lists. Walker and Treadwell sidestepped judging the status of the orphaned species by retaining Putz's lists as part of the vascular plant web site.

Later in 2005, NATL was enlarged to include the "Surge Area Wetlands," which became NATL-east. This 11 acres included habitats not present in the original NATL (now NATL-west) and, not surprisingly, significant numbers of species to be added to the master list. Fortunately, Getchen Ionta had just completed a floristic inventory of NATL-east as part of an update of the conservation component of the UF Master Plan. Of the 128 species listed by Ionta, 23 had not been found in NATL-west. To accommodate this new information Walker and Treadwell modified the master list to make it indicate separately the occurrence of a species in NATL-w and NATL-e.

As more new species were found in NATL, they were added to the master list of scientific names and to the subsidiary lists of common names. From 2006 until 11 Mar 2009, the additions were recorded on the following four pages :
2005–2006 Additions verified by Walter Judd (n=2).
2007 Additions verified by Richard Weaver & Mark Garland (n=12).
      2006–2007 Additions by T. J. Walker (n=7).
2007–2009 Additions verified by Richard Weaver (n=12).

During Fall Semester 2008, Erica Van Etten began a spreadsheet to organize and make more accessible important data relevant to the species on the master list of NATL's vascular plants. In Spring Semester 2009, Bret Pasch continued the work under the direction of T. J. Walker. Starting on 11 Mar 2009, additions to the master list were recorded directly on the master spreadsheet. In Summer Semester 2009, Walker (with help from Natalie Hooton and Robert Guggenheim) completed the nine most critical fields of the master spreadsheet [Columns A-G,J,K] and developed secondary spreadsheets to organize the data in the lists of Putz and Ionta. Ably assisted by Robert Guggenheim, he reworked the vascular plant web site to incorporate the updates of the previous years.

The vascular plants of SEEP (Stormwater Ecological Enhancement Project) are of special interest but are incompletely represented in the master list. On 22 May 2008, Mark Clark recollected that a survey made prior to the re-contouring of the basin in 1998 revealed only 32 species. In 1999, 53 additional native species were planted in the basin by the Wetlands Club, and, in 2004, a 5-year survey found about 34 species in addition to those that were original or had been planted in 1999. A 10-year survey is a goal for 2009. On 27 Mar 2009, working from the list of species that had been sought for the planting in 1999, Mark Clark indicated 44 species that had been obtained and planted. Of these, 28 were already on the master list. The 16 that were new to the list and 3 other species that Clark knew to be at SEEP were added to the master list; for each record the source was listed as "Clark 2009" (see SEEP spreadsheet).

Volunteer botanical experts (THANKS!)
Jack Putz and Dan Ward of the Botany Department volunteered to undertake the original lists of NATL's vascular plants. Identificactions made by Cliff Martin and Gretchen Ionta were overseen by Walter Judd of the Botany Department. In 2005 and 2006, Walter Judd helped resolve identification and nomenclatural questions that arose in updating the list and making it useful. From 2007 to date, Richard Weaver, the botanist at the Division of Plant Industry, has contributed his interest in and knowledge of NATL's plants to become the go-to person for help in identifying plants along the nature trails and elsewhere in NATL. He and his assistant, Patti Anderson, continue to report new species that they find in NATL, which are then added to the master list.
